LIGHT – Visible for All to See

2015 light visible for all to see

Do you remember growing up singing “This Little Light of Mine?”

This little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Those Sunday school songs are so great not only because of their deep but simple messages but also because most of them come with hand motions. I proudly lifted my finger high up in the air the whole way through this song. I wanted my light (or finger in this case) to be visible for all to see.

I started 2015 by looking for a one word goal that might give overall definition to the year ahead. That word for me is LIGHT.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be a light in the darkness (Matthew 5:16).  To be a constant glowing REFLECTION of our Savior that pierces through the dark world and shines bright for all to see.

As a young girl growing up singing Sunday school songs, my heart was filled with His light and I was eager to share it with others.  But I will admit that over the years, my courage to share with others this never ending source of light has faded a bit.  I find that I have become more concerned with offending others than just allowing Christ to give me the words, to follow His direction.

Not long ago, I was lingering in a waiting room with friends and family of my dear friend, Traci, who was in the operating room being treated for breast cancer.  Traci was certainly a LIGHT in that hospital allowing her faith and trust to shine for every doctor, nurse, and attendant to see.  The surgery was a true success and she is now cancer free.  I will never forget the feeling of complete thankfulness for Christ’s healing power.  But when I think back on that day, I am reminded of something else.  The Lord provided an opportunity for me to be a light for Him, and I almost missed it.

I was just one of many people on hand that day at the hospital to support Traci and her family.  In fact, the group was so large that we were given our own separate room away from the main waiting room area.  But at one point, I ventured out to the main area with a friend.  We were checking on the status of Traci to see if the computerized board would reveal that she was in recovery yet or not.  I couldn’t figure out exactly what the codes meant until a gentlemen behind us explained what the letters stood for.  He wanted to visit.  He was all alone.  His wife was in day one of a two day surgery.  The love of his life was fighting for her life, and there was no one around to provide encouragement, to give him a hug, or even just listen.  I knew the Lord wanted me to offer to pray with him.  I knew it in my heart from the moment he spoke to me.  The feeling was overwhelming.  And yet, I didn’t ask.

That opportunity would have been lost if not for my friend.  She felt the Lord leading too.  She asked him if we could pray with him.  He said yes, and the three of us prayed together that day in that waiting room asking the Lord to heal his wife and to strengthen this man’s heart and give him peace.  Just as we finished, he received a phone call from his pastor and a friend walked in to sit with him.  He thanked us and we went on our way.

I’m not so sure that we were as big of a blessing to him that day as this experience was to me.  When I feel the Lord leading me to share, to pray, to care for someone in need, this experience will forever remind me to be obedient.  It is not about me, my fears, my inhibitions, or even about my understanding of the situation, it is about being obedient to the King of my heart and allowing Him to direct my path.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

In the end

I don’t want to regret any more lost opportunities.  I’m so grateful that Christ can use each of us to be part of His plan to share with a lost and hurting world.  He’ll provide the words, the strength, the courage.  All He asks is for a willing heart.

My prayer is that we set aside anything that is keeping us from being obedient to Christ’s call and that our hearts are open to the opportunities He provides for us to be a LIGHT that is visible for all to see.

LIGHT – Reflection

2015 light reflection

I started 2015 by looking for a one word goal that might give overall definition to the year ahead.  That word for me is LIGHT.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be a light in the darkness (Matthew 5:16).

As we know, all light has a source. On our own, the light of our lives can be rather weak and tend to fade into the darkness.  In this way, we are not unlike a flashlight. With new batteries, the light is bright and crisp, but, as the batteries are used, the light dims until it eventually goes out. In fact, this “little light of mine” (loved singing that song as a kid!) has felt a little dim the first few weeks into the new year.  It’s just been a struggle to feel the joy of getting back into the normal routines, a chore to find my rhythm again, and I’ve even felt a little sadness that some of those last few quiet days of 2014 are over. In a sense, some of the chaos of 2015 has begun.  But in order for our LIGHT to shine bright in this new year, we must plug into the true and eternal source of all power and light – Christ.

I remember growing up and my mom used to say that she could sense a change in my speech, my attitude, and even my personality when I spent time around certain kids.  It took me a while to see what my wise mother was talking about as I didn’t even notice the change.  What she meant in our discussions was that who I spent the most time with became a great influence on me.  And depending upon my decisions of who I surrounded myself with (for the good and sometimes for the bad), I could be setting myself up for success or failure.  Reminds me of a great quote by Jim Rohn (see below).

5 people

Perhaps you recall having a similar discussion with one of your parents.  I certainly “get it” now what she was telling me all those years as I spend a great deal of time talking with my children about the importance of their friendship choices.  I think there is real truth in that quote about each of us becoming the average of our five closest companions.  The question we might consider “reflecting” on today is have we chosen Christ as our #1 friend or did He even make our top five?

Our top five have quite an effect on the LIGHT we reflect.  We actually “allow” them to determine our wattage.  And as great as friends and family can be (especially when we have chosen wisely – my mother would be so proud), their lights can tend to fluctuate just like ours can.  But if the source of our LIGHT is Christ, we can be a constant glowing reflection of our Savior.  He should be the never ending source of our brightness. He’s the one we should allow to lead and guide us through the ups and downs and even the dark moments of this life.

So what is they key to making sure it is Christ’s LIGHT we are reflecting?  We need to choose to make him Lord and Savior of our lives (click here to read more about Christ’s Simple Plan), and we need to spend time daily allowing Him to guide us, teach us, and protect us from a dark world.  I know we all talk a great deal about how we need to spend more quiet time with Christ, but what are we waiting for?  Each day that we can’t seem to find the time, we miss out on so many opportunities to be a LIGHT for Him.  We miss out on allowing Him to bring our chaos into order.  We miss out on finding joy even in the midst of sorrow.  Let’s not miss out any more!

Join me in making a commitment for 2015 (and beyond!) to daily spend time in prayer and reading the Bible even if just for a few minutes.  For me, the best time is first thing in the morning with a strong cup of coffee.  It sets the tone for my entire day.  Perhaps for you the evening would be better.  Figure it out, put it as a reminder on your phone or calendar, and just do it!  Reading His word will light the way for us in this new year (Psalm 119:105)!

Psalm 119,105

My prayer is that we allow Christ to be the source of our light, that our lives are a constant glowing reflection of His love to a world in need, and that we choose to make time each day for Him.

Happy New Year!

LIGHT

2015 light

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about resolutions for 2015 over the last week. I read recently where it is good to have one word that embodies your overall goal. With that in mind, my one word goal for this year is LIGHT.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be a light in the darkness.

Like many of you, our family has had its share of experiences with blackouts over the years. One of the more memorable was caused by the Christmas “blizzard” of 2012 (not much of a present!). It descended upon us on Christmas Day bringing freezing rain, sleet, snow, and strong winds.

Needless to say, the power lines were no match for this weather, and we were left without electricity. For two and a half days, we experienced a life without good heat, without the sound of television or electronic gadgets working (OK, so that part was actually nice for a little while), but more than anything we experienced a life in the dark.

Everything seemed gloomy, hazy, and out of focus when the night began to set in. We became extremely thankful for flashlights, candles, and the light from the fireplace to allow us to see at least a little. Truly, any source of light was appreciated.

Reflecting back over that dark Christmas, it reminded me of the importance of light in each of our lives (and not just any light but the everlasting light that Christ brings to our lives).  In thinking about my goal for 2015, I would like to explore over the next few weeks how we might be a light in the coming year – a light that is reflective, focused, pierces through the darkness, and is visible for all to see.

Perhaps you might consider being a light in 2015 through every action, every thought, and every word spoken thereby allowing the Lord to use you to draw others close to Him. I certainly look forward to learning and praying through this together!

Happy New Year!

A Christmas Run

A Christmas Run

Reading back over Luke 2 this morning. Just can’t read enough about the birth of Jesus this week. Keep coming back to one word – running.

After the angels appeared to the shepherds and told them about Jesus, scripture says they left RUNNING to find the baby. They didn’t take their time, they didn’t figure out what to do with the sheep, they didn’t make an elaborate plan (goodness knows I love a plan), or even check in with anyone. They just started running in the direction of their Savior.

Where are we running to this morning (and I don’t mean for exercise sake)? Are we running toward Jesus with excitement in our step? Are we just standing around waiting for Him to nudge us along? Do we spend way too much time getting warmed up? Or are we running in the exact opposite direction? Just as the angels announced His presence to the shepherds, He is calling us to Him today.

After the shepherds saw Jesus, scripture says they began telling everyone they knew. Do we share that same enthusiasm, the same excitement to share with others about our Savior, or are we taking our time, making a plan, dodging the issue, or staying put and worrying about being offensive?

My prayer is that we run with renewed excitement toward Jesus every single day, that we allow Him to guide our steps, and that we can’t possibly contain His love but have an overwhelming desire to share it with everyone we meet.

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, goodwill towards men”.

Merry Christmas,
