Our God is Greater

Our God is Greater

A few weeks ago, I taught a lesson from the book of Nahum. He was prophesizing about the coming destruction of the city of Nineveh because of their willful disobedience and outright turning away from The Lord. In the first few verses of this book, the prophet Nahum describes some characteristics of God that often make us uncomfortable. The ultimate focus of the lesson was that our God is jealous, just, sovereign, and good. While it was a pleasure and an encouragement for me to focus on the goodness of God, I must admit that I had difficulty grappling with those other qualities.

In fact, I really didn’t want to teach that lesson at all and even thought of changing the text to a lesson that I would enjoy teaching. And then, with His goodness and grace (and probably a shaking of His head), Christ adjusted my heart and gave me a desire to focus on who He really is, all of his characteristics and qualities, not just the parts of Him that make me feel good about who I am or whatever problem that I may be facing.

God is jealous. He wants our relationship with Him to be first and foremost in our priorities. It is often times too easy to slip here and allow other things or other people to take over our thoughts, our time, and our finances. We must be on guard and always place Him first in our lives.

God is sovereign. When I pray without faith, when I question and doubt, when I struggle to understand why or how things could happen, I am completely overlooking the sovereignty of our God. He knows all; He understands all; He should be our all in all. In Him, there is no doubt.

God is just. We have a just and holy God who desires us to be obedient to Him and his will for our lives so that we can receive the benefits of life with Him. He is slow to anger and wants each of us to come to repentance. He desires to protect us from the consequences that sin can have on our lives.

God is good. Every single moment. Through the ups and downs of life, in times of sadness and even despair, our God is good. His grace is always sufficient for our needs.

Those first few verses in Nahum overwhelmed me at first. Not every verse in the Bible is easy to take. But sometimes those hard to grasp verses are where true understanding is brought to light. Perhaps like me, you have just wanted to dwell on God’s mercy and grace. But what I learned from this study was that when I only think of our Lord that way, I am limiting Him in my life. I’m limiting the pure majesty and awesomeness of our God, the praise that He so richly deserves, the prominence that He requires in my life, and the reverence that He should feel from my heart each and every day.

Romans 1133

My prayer is that we know and understand (as best we can) the fullness of our God. That we give Him the honor and praise He deserves, that we keep Him first in our lives walking in obedience. That we pull away from our doubts and draw nearer to His sovereignty. And that we always remember his goodness and mercy.

The Color Debate

The Color Debate

The polarizing dress color debate. Regardless of what colors you see, I found this to be such a great illustration of the transforming power of Jesus.

As I understand it (from the morning news), the actual color of the dress is blue and black but they used a light effect to take away the color thus making it appear gold and white (at least to some people).

Without Jesus, our lives are fairly dark. The cruelties of this world and the natural sin in our hearts can cast a harsh shadow on everthing. But Jesus’ light – His amazing, transforming, powerful light can transform our hearts and our lives and when we allow Him to guide our daily steps we can grow to become much more “golden” as we
reflect the glory of Christ.

I’m so grateful for the amazing love of our Savior who isn’t content to leave us wearing a dark dress (metaphorically speaking) but wants to transform us so that we “sparkle” and shed His light to all those we come in contact with.

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” ~ Matthew 5:16

My prayer is that we use this illustration as an easy conversation with others (it is definitely the topic of conversation right now) to share the light and love of Jesus to a world in need.

The Love of My Life

The Love of My Life

February is one of my favorite months. Smack dab in the middle of what can sometimes be the dreary winter months is cause for a celebration – a celebration of LOVE!  February is known as the month of love because it contains Valentine’s Day.  I love it all – the flowers, the candy, the sweet words we share, and the time we spend focusing on all those we love.

23 years into our marriage, I’m still madly in love with my husband.  Sure, too many days are filled with crazy work schedules, laundry, dinner, and rushing kids around, but we still try to devote time throughout the day to just each other. It can be as simple as a phone call to see how the other one is doing, or it can be a quiet dinner when the kids are out. Marriage, like all relationships, requires effort and commitment to keep it healthy and maintain that connection. Since our marriage is extremely important to both of us, we work at it and ask the Lord to stay in the center of our marriage.  I’m grateful every single day to walk by my husband’s side through this life.  He’s my very best friend in the world, and I’ve known him longer than most anyone.  But the real love of my life came much earlier.

The Love of Christ

As a young child, I attended church regularly and listened to my Dad preach.  My memories of those lessons were about Jesus and His love for us.

Many years went by and those around me thought I was a believer, but I knew differently.  I felt empty and alone. I lacked a sense of purpose. I was scared about what the future held for me. In short, my heart was burdened, but I also knew there was an answer. I could feel God speaking to my heart and telling me that there was more and my life could be full with him.

At a youth meeting at my Uncle’s church, I heard kids sharing about their relationship with Christ – how He helped guide them through life’s challenges and gave them a hope and a future.  Jesus spoke to me through those kids that night, and I prayed with my cousin and I asked Jesus to come into my life. I told Him about how I had failed Him and others, but I also thanked him for coming to this earth and laying down his life so that I might be made new and experience his love and forgiveness. It was then that I could truthfully say that Jesus was the lord and savior of my life.

Christ is the love of my life!  That certainly doesn’t mean our relationship is perfect.  I can look back and recognize times in my life when I didn’t always place Him first, didn’t spend quality time with Him, didn’t seek His guidance or direction (come to think of it, this is a continuous journey).  I am certainly thankful that His love comes with an abundance of grace!

This February, I have been continually drawn to scriptures that point to His amazing love for us.  His love is everlasting, it knows no bounds. It isn’t conditional on our actions, words, or thoughts (in fact, scripture says nothing can separate us from the love of God), and He displayed this love so generously by dying a horrible death on a cross for our sins.  The very definition of God is love (1 John 4:8).

And love is so important to our Savior that the greatest directive He gave us was to LOVE others!  In fact, He said that’s how they would recognize that we are Christ followers, because of the love that we share.  My favorite verse about this has become Galatians 5:6.  It simplifies our purpose.  It brings our chaos into order.  It reminds us of the most important thing – our faith expressing itself through love.

What Counts

My prayer is that we use the celebration of love to remind us not only of the everlasting love of our Savior but that we recognize the importance of sharing His love each day not just with our family and friends but with everyone He places in our paths.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Out of Rhythm

Out of Rhythm

It is all too easy to take our hearts for granted.  Our hearts are such complex structures, and the Lord created them to have a natural rhythm. It beats about 100,000 times in a day, which is about 35 million beats in one year, and we rarely, if ever, think about it until it misses a beat.  I know that I have experienced an arrhythmia on occasion, and it definitely grabs my attention.  This past week, I was visiting with a family member about her husband’s heart.  He was experiencing an arrhythmia that was much more abnormal.  His experience made me think about the rhythm of our lives, and how much we need God to help us keep our lives in the proper rhythm.

I must admit that I feel as though my own life’s rhythm has been out of sync the last few weeks.  I’ve struggled to get over a lingering cold that moved into bronchitis, felt overwhelmed in catching back up with tasks at work and home, and simply lost a little of my usual joy.  But the real problem with my rhythm was a lack of time spent with Christ.

It is so easy to lose our focus, to get overwhelmed, and throw ourselves into the tasks at hand.  We allow worry and frustration to consume our thoughts.  We work so hard and it all seems like futile efforts.  But just as Christ created our hearts to naturally pause between each beat, we need quiet moments spent with Him in prayer and bible study in order to function at our best.  When we seek Him first, turning all our worries and stress over to Him, asking Him to direct our steps, to guide where we allocate our time, it is amazing how quickly we can get back in sync.

My prayer is that we allow Christ to set the rhythm of our lives and our spiritual hearts.  That we pause each day to spending time with our loving Savior.  And that through His righteousness, we will function at our best for His glory!
